Palm issues takedown for TealOS
If you’re a fan of TealOS (you know, that fairly striking webOS-aping launcher for Palm devices), you’re in for some bad news. According to a post on the company’s TealTalk support forum, a rep tells users that Palm has issued a takedown of the lookalike. In their words:I’m sorry to say that at Palm’s request, as of this upcoming Monday, March 30, we will no longer be selling or distributing TealOS.While we can certainly understand the motivations on Palm’s part behind wanting to scuttle this copycat, we do find it a little odd. When we met with a Palm rep to retrieve the Pre earlier in the month, he actually… Continue reading
Cox planning to roll out tru2way STBs this summer
Filed under: Industry, Set-top boxes, Cable
Although it flew beneath the radar at this year’s CES, tru2way looks to be spooling up the PR machine in advance of The Cable Show in April. Leading the charge, Cox Communications has announced its agreement to use NDS tru2way software starting this summer; and since the field of tru2way-equipped TVs is slim pickings, you know the delivery mechanism — set top boxes. Grousing aside, technology has to move forward, so Cox is going to start introducing Cisco (Scientific-Atlanta) and Motorola manufactured boxes with NDS software, with plans to do a market-by-market… Continue reading
boxee releases new “bleeding edge” alpha, inks deal with Pandora
Filed under: Internet, New content

Now that ZeeVee’s back in business with its much improved Zinc broadband video portal, boxee actually has some serious competition to keep an eye on. That said, the company is hosting a meetup in NYC tonight in order to launch a new “bleeding edge” alpha that will integrate Pandora radio / RadioTime and showcase a more robust API. Furthermore, you’ll find a fresh XUL-based framework for the boxee browser to enable the app to more easily interact with any web-based video, and as if that wasn’t enough, there will also be a PBS application baked in… Continue reading
Develop Film in Coffee and Vitamin C

It turns out that it’s possible to develop film in a mixture of instant coffee, washing soda and vitamin C. This is, to me, amazing. Here’s the recipe.
12 oz. water
5 teaspoons instant coffee crystals
3 1/2 teaspoons washing soda
1/2 teaspoon vitamin C powder
Dubbed cafenol (its a geeky photochem joke), the developer is used just like a regular developing solution, only you can make it by raiding the kitchen cupboard (apart from the instant coffee… Continue reading
Skype for iPhone coming soon?
We’re still filing this away in the rumor folder for now, but we’ll be honest — this is totally believable. GigaOM has it on authority that a bona fide Skype for iPhone client will be launched as early as next week, and with CTIA kicking off on April 1st, we’d say the timing is just about ideal. Of course, we’ve already seen a variety of alternatives for bringing Skype and other VoIP apps to Apple’s darling, but by and large, they’ve been supremely unimpressive. There’s no word on pricing (we’re crossing our fingers for free) or any other tasty tidbits, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an… Continue reading

Is Netflix PS3-bound, too?

Rumors of Netflix content streaming to the PS3 date back to, well, the first rumors of it hitting the Xbox 360. We all know which of those two platforms got some red envelope love last year, and now, soon after hearing the service may be heading to the Wii, we have what seems to be similar confirmation that Netflix is at least still considering bringing their bitstream to the PS3. The screenshot above was captured by a reader, showing a message like that on the earlier Wii survey — in fact it’s exactly the same from what we can see. Given our proximity to that least… Continue reading
Flash coming to Android courtesy of BSQUARE
The fine folks at BSQUARE have announced that they’ll be porting Adobe Flash to Google’s Android on behalf of a “global Tier 1 carrier.” Whether or not that implies this “global Tier 1 carrier” will have exclusive access to Flash out of the gate remains to be seen. Details are otherwise very scarce, and it’s unclear how this relates to the demo of Flash Andy Rubin showed off at Adobe MAX last year. However, BSQUARE bought NEC’s Adobe(R) Flash(R) Technology Consulting and Distribution business 12 months ago, and has done Android work for other customers, so the expertise should certainly be there — and naturally we wouldn’t expect them to go shouting about this if they… Continue reading
Monster “HDMI Difference” scam still kickin’ in Fry’s Electronics
Filed under: Misc, Cables, Ports

Man, this is just sad. Over a year after the internet was set ablaze with rage after seeing Monster’s HDMI cable scam, we’ve just been notified that the tactic is still being used in at least one Fry’s Electronics store. For those unaware, the rig works as such: two TVs are set beside each other along with a sign that says “See the Monster HDMI Difference.” Trouble is, the “Monster set” (on the right) is connected to its source via an HDMI cable, while the “non-Monster set” (on the left) is connected via composite cable. As in, the lamest looking… Continue reading
New York Mets’ Citi Field set to be loaded with AQUOS HDTVs
Filed under: Displays, Sharp, LCD, Sports

It’s still up in the air whether the New York Mets will have a solid 2009 season, but one thing is for certain: locals are stoked to see Citi Field open up on April 13th. Sharp has just pushed out a press release that gives baseball loving HD junkies even more reason to go check out a game in person, as we’re told that over 800 AQUOS HDTVs will be littered about the new venue. There will also be a gigantic 108-inch Sharp LCD in Citi Field’s main lobby, which ought to complement the… Continue reading
