The Park Tool Cable Stretcher is a uni-tasker, but its single job appears to be so helpful that we’ll let it through.

The stretcher is a one handed (once set up) device with which to fit and adjust gear and brake cables on your bike. Fixie users, who have neither of these heathen features on their pristine machines, can stop reading now.

Scientists at the Nishi Lab of the University of Electrocommunications have developed a tool which measures camera shake. The surprise is that putting the camera on a tripod can actually make things worse.

The measurements were designed to check the effects of mirror slap and shutter vibration in SLR cameras. Vibration caused by the mirror is well known — as the mirror flips up to let light onto the sensor of film, it shakes the camera and — according… Continue reading

“HD Supremacy” was claimed by DISH Network, but DirecTV is heading down the Comcast path, touting its VOD offerings with the biggest selection of 1080p movies. With “more than 30″ movies available it doesn’t quite match Blu-ray and falls short of HDX, but DirecTV Plus HD DVR receiver owners can look forward to new flicks like Slumdog Millionaire, The Wrestler and Quantum of Solace being available in the highest res as soon as they launch on the DirecTV on Demand platform. According to VP Eric Shanks, even customers without 1080p… Continue reading

Palm Pre finds a totally unofficial home in China

Before phones show up at retail, they start showing up in totally random places in China — it’s basically a law of physics. And once that happens, they almost inevitably end up posted in a forum somewhere, and… well, you can gather where that leads. Chinese firm Ludle — which, according to its own description is in the business of “exploiting, producing and selling” — somehow came across a Pre (or possibly just an empty shell thereof), and a staff member took the time to do a quick set of comparo shots against a Centro and iPhone 3G. He notes that the Pre gets clogged with fingerprints as easily as the iPhone but handles… Continue reading

We’ll definitely be missing Philips UltraWidescreen 21:9 display with no U.S. release in the plans, but buyers world wide who need a bit of a convincer to drop the €4,000 need only check out the new Cinema “interactive movie.” The 2+ minute feature takes you through a fictional movie setup with director, FX supervisor and director of photography chiming in on the importance of cinema widescreen. We haven’t heard much about the appearance of the HTC Touch Diamond2 on US shores apart from a few AT&T-related whispers, but the squared-off handset is starting to pop up overseas, and the requisite unboxings and video tours have started flooding in. After having its prototypes rejected a few times over by carriers here in America, it seems that Michael Dell is taking his smartphone initiative overseas. ‘Course, he’ll need something mighty special to outshine Lenovo’s OPhone over in China, but we digress. Hot on the heels of rumors galore, Reuters is reporting that Dell is indeed aiming to launch multiple smartphones in the Chinese market before the dawn of 2010. A pair of analysts have asserted that the firm is working with Chi Mei Communications — an unlisted unit of Taiwan’s Hon Hai — on the hardware front, while China-based Red Office is engineering the operating system. Not surprisingly, spokespeople from… Continue reading
